Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which matters most for the soil and the people farming it. It uses roughly the same water as conventional cotton. On a tote, the bigger number is use: cotton has to replace 50 to 150 plastic bags before it comes out ahead, so this only works if people carry it.
