Paper has the oldest recycling infrastructure of any material here, which makes recycled paper products both cheap and easy to verify. Post-consumer recycled content is the number to ask for — it means paper that was used and recovered, rather than mill offcuts that never left the factory and would have been reprocessed anyway.
Recycled stock has a slightly warmer, less bright tone and a visible texture. That is not a defect and most buyers prefer it, but it does affect print: white ink does not sit as opaquely, and photographic reproduction is softer. Deboss and letterpress, on the other hand, look better on recycled board than on coated stock.
