A welcome kit is the first physical thing a new hire receives from the company, and the material choices in it are read as a signal whether or not you intend them to be. It is also the most repeatable order in merchandise — the same kit ships every month — which makes it worth getting right once.
The combination that works is a bag, something to write in, something to drink from, and one useful piece of tech. Recycled and bamboo versions of all four exist at sensible price points, so there is no trade-off to make. Keep the kit light: these ship individually to home addresses, and weight drives the recurring cost more than the contents do.
