The Forest Stewardship Council certifies that wood and paper are traceable through a documented chain of custody back to responsibly managed forest. It is the oldest and best-established certification in this catalogue, and unusually for an environmental claim you can verify it yourself: the code on the product is checkable against the FSC public database.
Three labels, meaning different things. FSC 100% — entirely from certified forest. FSC Recycled — entirely reclaimed fibre. FSC Mix — a controlled blend of certified, recycled and verified non-controversial sources. Mix is the most common and is a real claim, but it is not the same as 100%, and a supplier who quotes "FSC certified" without saying which is being imprecise.
