Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and that single fact carries most of its environmental case. It regrows from the existing root system after cutting, reaches harvest in three to five years, needs little irrigation and no replanting, and sequesters carbon quickly while growing. It also engraves beautifully, which is why it dominates the eco end of the promotional catalogue.
Two qualifications worth knowing. Laminated bamboo — boards, most desk items — is glued, and the adhesive is not a green material, so ask for formaldehyde-free binders. And the growing and processing is concentrated in Asia, which puts real shipping distance behind a US-delivered bamboo product. Neither undermines the choice; both belong in an honest description of it.

- Some species grow up to a metre a day at peak, and a culm reaches harvestable maturity in three to five years against 20 to 60 for hardwood. Cutting does not kill the plant — the root system sends up new culms, so a stand is harvested repeatedly without replanting.
- Is bamboo biodegradable?
- Solid untreated bamboo is. Laminated bamboo bonded with adhesive, and bamboo-fibre composites mixed with resin, are not — those are better described as reduced-plastic products. Check which one you are actually buying.
