The tote is the most-ordered eco promotional product and the easiest one to get wrong. A cotton tote has to be used somewhere between 50 and 150 times before it beats the single-use plastic bag it replaced — the growing and processing of cotton is that input-heavy. Ordered as a giveaway nobody asked for, it is a worse environmental outcome than no bag at all, which is an uncomfortable thing for a promotional supplier to write and true anyway.
Two things fix it. Order a bag people will actually keep — which usually means a real fabric weight, a shape that works for groceries or a laptop, and a design someone would carry without the logo being the point. And prefer recycled input, because the break-even maths is completely different:
- Recycled rPET — spun from post-consumer bottles. Light, foldable, wipes clean, and the lowest break-even of anything in this category. The default choice for events.
- Recycled cotton and canvas — offcuts and post-industrial waste, no new irrigation. Heavier hand feel than rPET, better for retail-style bags.
- Organic cotton — grown without synthetic pesticides. Still water-intensive; buy it for the fibre quality and the GOTS story, not as a low-impact claim.
- Jute and hemp — minimal inputs, distinctly natural look, coarse print surface. Good for food and market bags, poor for fine multi-colour artwork.
Minimum on most totes is 100 pieces with 5–10 business days production. Rush production is available on many items in this range.

- Only if they are used a lot. Studies put the break-even against a single-use plastic bag anywhere from 50 to over 100 uses for conventional cotton. Recycled rPET and recycled cotton totes break even far sooner because the fibre already existed. The decisive factor is whether the recipient keeps using it, so quality and design matter more here than the material label.
- What is rPET and how is it different from regular polyester?
- rPET is polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles rather than virgin petroleum. Chemically it performs the same. It avoids new plastic production and diverts bottles from waste streams. Look for GRS certification if the recycled percentage needs to be verifiable.
- What is the minimum order for custom eco tote bags?
- Around 100 pieces for screen-printed stock totes. Custom-made bags with your own dimensions and materials start higher, typically 500 to 1,000, and run 60 to 90 days because they are manufactured to order.
- Which print method works best on recycled fabric?
- Screen printing for one to three solid colours — cheapest per unit and durable. Heat transfer for photographic or gradient artwork. Embroidery on heavier canvas and jute where a premium feel is the point. Recycled rPET takes screen print well but has a temperature ceiling, so confirm before choosing transfer.
