Hemp and jute are the lowest-input natural fibres in common use. Both grow fast and densely enough to suppress weeds without herbicide, need little irrigation, and improve rather than deplete the soil they are grown in. Jute in particular is one of the cheapest natural fibres in the world, which is why it dominates market and grocery bags.
The look is unmistakably natural — coarse weave, undyed tones — and that is the point of specifying it. It is also the constraint: the surface takes bold single-colour screen printing well and fine multi-colour artwork badly. Design for it rather than fighting it.

- Why is hemp considered sustainable?
- It grows quickly and densely enough to outcompete weeds without herbicide, needs far less water than cotton, and returns nutrients to the soil. It also produces more fibre per hectare than most alternatives.
- Can jute bags be printed in full colour?
- Not well. The weave is coarse and absorbent, so bold one- or two-colour screen prints reproduce cleanly while fine detail and gradients break up. A woven or printed label patch is the usual answer for complex artwork.
