Recycled or bonded leather is made from the offcuts and fibre left over from conventional leather production, reconstituted with a binder into sheet material. It uses a genuine waste stream from an industry that produces a lot of it, and it costs considerably less than full-grain hide.
Be clear about what it is not. Bonded leather is not full-grain leather and will not age the same way — it wears at the surface rather than developing patina, and its service life is shorter. As a journal cover or a card holder in a mid-priced gift it is a sound, honest choice; described as "leather" without qualification it is overselling.
