Ocean-bound plastic is collected within about 50 km of a coastline in places without working waste collection, so it is plastic intercepted before it reaches the sea, not plastic fished out of it. That is a real intervention and it is also a smaller claim than the name suggests. Certified programmes can document the collection chain.
