Wheat straw is the stalk left over after grain harvest — an agricultural by-product that was historically burnt or ploughed in. Ground to fibre and bound with a plastic resin, it replaces roughly 30 to 50% of the virgin plastic in an item, giving a distinctive flecked, matte finish that reads as natural at a glance.
Be precise about what it is: a wheat straw cup is a plastic cup with less plastic in it. It is not compostable, it is not biodegradable in any practical sense, and it should not be described as either. As a way of cutting virgin plastic in high-volume, low-cost items it is genuinely useful and one of the cheapest credible eco materials available.
