Eco promotional materials, compared
Eleven materials, what each claim genuinely covers, and the limitation each one has that the catalogue copy leaves out.
Every material here is a real improvement on the conventional default and every one has a limitation the listing will not mention. Both halves matter, so both are below.
Recycled rPET
What it is: polyester from post-consumer bottles. Strength: identical performance to virgin, price parity, and certifiable through GRS. Limitation: still polyester — it sheds microfibres in the wash and is not biodegradable. Browse rPET
Bamboo
What it is: a fast-growing grass, harvested in 3–5 years without replanting. Strength: renewable, engraves beautifully, reads as unmistakably natural. Limitation: laminated bamboo is glued, and almost all of it is processed in Asia. Browse bamboo
Cork
What it is: bark stripped from living cork oaks on a nine-year cycle. Strength: genuinely regenerative — the harvest keeps the forests standing. Limitation: natural colour variation between batches, limited product range. Browse cork
Organic cotton
What it is: cotton grown without synthetic pesticides or fertiliser. Strength: soil health, no chemical runoff, better conditions for growers; GOTS covers the whole chain. Limitation: still water-intensive, sometimes lower yield per hectare. Browse organic cotton
Recycled cotton
What it is: reclaimed textile waste, shredded and respun. Strength: no new growing at all — the lowest-input cotton available. Limitation: shorter fibres, so usually blended and coarser to the touch. Browse recycled cotton
Wheat straw
What it is: crop-stalk fibre bound in resin, typically 30–50% straw. Strength: uses an agricultural by-product, cuts virgin plastic, cheapest credible eco material. Limitation: not compostable and not biodegradable — it is a plastic composite. Browse wheat straw
Hemp and jute
What it is: low-input natural bast fibres. Strength: minimal water, no herbicide, improve the soil. Limitation: coarse surface — bold artwork only. Browse hemp and jute
Recycled paper
What it is: post-consumer recovered fibre. Strength: mature recycling infrastructure, cheap, verifiable through FSC Recycled. Limitation: warmer tone and softer print reproduction; ask for the post-consumer percentage specifically. Browse recycled paper
Stone paper
What it is: calcium carbonate bound with resin. Strength: no trees, no water, no bleach; waterproof and tear-resistant. Limitation: not biodegradable and rejected by normal paper recycling. A manufacturing improvement, not an end-of-life one.
Seed paper
What it is: recycled pulp with seeds embedded. Strength: the only product designed to leave nothing behind. Limitation: roughly a year of seed viability and soft print detail; use a regionally appropriate mix. Browse seed paper
Stainless steel
What it is: food-grade 18/8 steel, increasingly with recycled content. Strength: decade-plus service life and infinite recyclability — longevity is the argument. Limitation: energy-intensive to produce, so it only pays off if the item is genuinely kept. Browse stainless steel
The short ranking, with the caveat that ranking is the wrong frame
If the item will be kept for years: steel, cork, bamboo. If it will be used briefly by many people: recycled rPET, recycled paper. If it should not exist afterwards: seed paper. If price dominates: wheat straw, recycled paper. The material that is wrong for the job beats none of these regardless of how good its claim reads.

- Which promotional product material is most sustainable?
- It depends on the item's job. Recycled input is the strongest and most verifiable claim; renewable materials like bamboo and cork are next; a durable item that displaces repeated single-use purchases can beat both, provided it is actually kept. Ranking materials without knowing the use produces bad decisions.
- Is bamboo better than recycled plastic?
- For renewability and end of life, yes. For shipping footprint and for products needing durability under daily use, often not. Bamboo also involves adhesives when laminated. Both are real improvements on virgin plastic.
- What is stone paper?
- Paper made from calcium carbonate bound with resin — no trees, no water and no bleach in manufacture, and it is waterproof. It does not biodegrade usefully and normal paper recycling will not take it, so read it as an input improvement rather than a circular one.
